Here is difference between Security group and mail enabled security group
Security Group
Role Based Admin Permisson
Use in SharePoint/OneDrive restriction and permissions
Mail Enabled Security Group
Exchange Mailbox
Functions like Distribution list
Use in SharePoint/OneDrive restriction and permissions
Point to remember : Approval to join the group does not work with Security Group
