WARNING. These is alot of good information here but this is for the SLES 11 kernel running on SGI's large cpu systems where the tickless kernel is off nohz=0. SLES 12 resolved a scheduler thread issue after I left SGI so the TICKLESS kernel is on. This lecture is based on a HZ kernel. SGI also had a 100HZ kernel for Red Hat for large cpu counts. SLES supports up to 4096 cpu's in a single system image at the time of the recording.
2023 WARNING This presentation covers CFS Scheduler. The Linux 6.6 kernel is merging a NEW scheduler EEVDF scheduler Earliest Eligible Virtual Deadline First scheduling. This feature is better for desktop and low CPU count scheduling. Large batch sites like ORNL or NASA use PBSPro for workload scheduling using cpusests to partition up to 4096 cpu systems. Cpusets also partition and isolate the filesystem cache IO. Container apps like Docker should also consider Cpusets
