For 2,000 years, sailors described a creature no scientist believed existed. Eyes the size of dinner plates. Tentacles longer than a ship's mast. A beak that could shatter bone.

They called it the Kraken. Science called it a myth.

Then in 2004, a research team led by Tsunemi Kubodera captured the first images of a living giant squid, 900 meters deep in the Pacific Ocean. The monster was real.

This documentary explores Architeuthis dux, the giant squid, and its even larger relative, the colossal squid, Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni. You'll learn how these animals survive crushing pressure, why their blood is blue, how their brain wraps around their own throat, and why they are built to hunt the ocean's most feared predator, the sperm whale.

Featuring research from Japetus Steenstrup, Malcolm Clarke, Dan-Eric Nilsson, Steve O'Shea, and Edith Widder.

The ocean is still 95% unexplored. This is what we've found so far, and what it suggests about everything we haven't.
