1st Reading (Dan 13:41c-62)
While in exile in Babylon, the assembly of Israel condemned Susanna to death, falsely accused by two elders.
Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice: "Eternal God, who knows secrets and knows everything before it happens, you know that they have brought false accusations against me. Behold, I am dying, though I have done none of the things of which these men maliciously accuse me."
And the Lord heard her voice. As she was being led away to execution, God stirred up the holy spirit in a young man named Daniel. He cried out with a loud voice: "I am clean from her blood!" All the people turned to him and said, "What does this word you have spoken mean?" Then he stood up and said, "Are you so foolish, O men of Israel, that you condemn a daughter of Israel without investigation or certainty? Return to the court, for they have accused her falsely."
All the people turned back in haste. The elders said, "Sit here among us and explain to us, for God has given you the right of eldership." Daniel said to them, "Separate them, one from another, and I will judge them."
When they were separated, he called one of them and said to him, "You have grown old in your wickedness, and now your sins are being revealed, which you have committed before, pronouncing unjust judgments. You have condemned the innocent and acquitted the guilty, though the Lord has said, 'You shall not put to death the innocent and the righteous.' Now then, if you have truly seen her, tell me, under what tree did you see them lying together?” He said, “Under the lentiscus.” Daniel replied, “Good! You have lied to your own detriment. For the angel of God has already received a decree from God against you, to split you in two.” He sent him away, and commanded another to be brought and said to him, “You Canaanite, not of Judah, your beauty has led you astray, and your lust has perverted your heart. This is how you dealt with the daughters of Israel, but they, in fear, lay with you. But the daughter of Judah did not consent to your wickedness. Now tell me, under what tree did you find them lying together?” He replied, “Under the oak.” Then Daniel said to him, “Good! You too have lied to your own detriment. For an angel of God is waiting with sword in hand to cut you in two, to destroy you!"
The whole assembly shouted loudly and praised God for saving those who hope in Him. Then they turned against the two elders, because Daniel had proved the accusation false by their own words. They were dealt with according to the evil they had done to their neighbors, killing them according to the Law of Moses. On that day, innocent blood was saved.
Gospel (John 8:12-20)
Jesus spoke to the Pharisees, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life."
The Pharisees said to Him, "You bear witness to yourself; your testimony is not true."
Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going. You judge only by human standards. I judge no one. And even if I do judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and he who sent me. It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. Behold, I testify about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me." Then they said to him, "Where is your Father?"
Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
He spoke these words in the treasury, while he was teaching in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
