The original text of the poem and its translation are below.

I see a castle in my dream, in dreary winter
Three hundred fifty years ago; A tall
Grey tower with the arrow slits is squinting
And accent icicles are hanging by the wall.

It gets dark early; men wrap up in hide and leather,
And in the dirty skins of wild beasts, they’d slain.
What for is it so cold, oh, God, - my palms together -
I do not dare to ask again.

Our pastor’s drunk, he’s tormented by vomit,
The holy water’s frozen still,
It feels like slaughtering, and death is in the air,
Without trial or judgement, simply kill.

The wenches’ squeals, like radio interference,
Salacious smacking, laughter, brawl.
And someone helped me take my armor off with incoherence
I don’t remember who, but, sure, love you all

I, too, blew my nose and spat on the walls,
and drank the infernal thick mead,
pulled up my pants, and ran to garderobe -
a hole in the floor – when in need

I saw them riding in the stables -
A bitless mare and stallion-the-dunce.
I fought with the swords and broke all my sabres
And certainly killed at least once.

It took me oh so long to waken
To hide it and let go of my guilt
Because, my friend, you’re left alone, forsaken
In chilling war, in bitter winter of my dream.

Do you recall, we used to crave to dress up
In blooming age when freedom’s all around?
I’m now old, not in the mood for press-ups,
Dream of a Tuscan home on a vinery background.

With kith and kin, together after dinner -
Shot glasses with grappa I’ll pass along
In peace with myself, by you forgiven.
And the artists have left me alone.
