An intervertebral disc is a fibrocartilaginous structure consisting of ring-shaped connective tissue plates and a gelatinous nucleus located centrally between the bodies of two adjacent vertebrae.
The zygapophysial joints (articulationes zygapophysiales) are formed between the superior articular process (processus articularis superior) of the vertebra below and the inferior articular process (processus articularis inferior) of the vertebra above.
