Do you use Microsoft Remote Desktop on the Mac? Then I have an important note and a useful tip for you.

With Microsoft Remote Desktop, you can remotely control a Windows computer from your Mac. To do this, open the app and simply connect to the desired computer by double-clicking. If you still use Microsoft Remote Desktop 8, then here’s an important note: Microsoft announced in late 2018 that version 8 is no longer being maintained. That means there will be no more security updates and the app sooner or later disappears from the Mac App Store.

But if you search in the App Store for “microsoft remote desktop”, then you’ll find two free apps from Microsoft. One is the older version 8 that really hasn’t been updated for months. And there’s Microsoft Remote Desktop 10. This is the official successor to version 8, which Microsoft is actively developing. By the way: You can also install version 10 in parallel to the old version. It then appears in the subdirectory “Microsoft Remote Desktop” under “Applications”.

There is only one small problem: So far, you had to re-enter all computers in version 10, because your previous settings are not automatically transfered. Recently, however, there is a solution for this: You can now import your old connections with a click, in the “Connections” menu via “Import from Microsoft Remote Desktop 8”. Afterwards enter your login password. Done.

Whether you want to upgrade to the new version or not, you have to decide for yourself. But basically you can do the same thing with both apps, that is remote controlling Windows computers.
