Often times it will be necessary to smooth a model so as to add more faces and provide a more detailed outcome. This is often typical when developing a character model. We will be taking advantage of Smooth Preview. Using Smooth Preview we will be able to see what our model will look like after having had a smooth operation performed on it. The great thing about Smooth Preview is that the smooth operation does not actually get carried out so we will still only be working with a low polygon model.

Part of the reason why we need to use Smooth Preview prior to applying a smooth operation on our model is that smoothing a model often shrinks it in size. Smooth Preview is however very easy to work with as it will essentially make our modeling almost mimic that of shaping a NURBS surface. Just like when working with a NURBS surface, moving one point will affect surrounding points thus allowing us to shape our model much like digital clay. Do not be deceived however, the model is not a NURBS surface and will still have all the same components available to us as any polygon model.

We can also add more edge loops to our model where necessary. Unlike a NURBS surface, using Smooth Preview will leave us with all the benefits of working with a polygon object. Therefor such tools as the Insert Edge Loop Tool will still be available to us at our convenience. Once we are all finished preparing our model for a smooth operation we will apply a smooth to the model and mirror it over to finish up the body geometry.
