It is possible to find traces of many civilizations in the lands of Bingöl, which is located in the Upper Euphrates section of the Eastern Anatolia Region and has a very rich cultural history. Bingöl and its surroundings, with its rich historical past dating back to 4000-5000 BC; It has a rich historical heritage as it is under the domination of many states such as the Urartians, Assyrians, Hittites, Persians, Romans, Seljuks and Ottomans.
Genç and Kiğı, which are the oldest towns of the province rather than the central district, carry the historical accumulation of the province within themselves. Most of the historical artifacts within the provincial borders are located in the southern parts of Genç, Kiğı, Adaklı and Solhan districts, around Yenibaşak. While some of these works belong to pre-Islamic civilizations, some of them belong to Islamic civilization.
The most important values remaining from the pre-Islamic period in our city are castles, tombs, caves and churches. The most intact of these structures that have survived to the present day are the Kuba tomb ruins in Genç, Kralkızı Castle, Sebiterias Castle and Kiğı Castle. There are also ruins of a few churches and various tombstones in Kiğı and its surroundings. It is stated that pre-Islamic works were left by the Urartians, Medes, Persians and Romans, who were known to be active in the region.
Bingöl, which was administered as a subsidiary of neighboring provinces during the Ottoman period, was made a province in 1936 and its old name, Çapakçur, was changed to its current name.
