THIS VIDEO: Don McCullin said, ‘It’s been a cesspit, really, my life’ It’s no wonder he finds comfort creating landscapes in the countryside around his Somerset home or creating still lifes in his shed. His name is associated with his heartfelt images of war and tragedy, but at the age of 90 he’s still trying to shift this perception. After seven decades of escaping snipers, mortar fire and capture, he feels uncomfortable being a survivor when so many that surrounded him were injured or killed. Jim Morrison sang that nobody gets out of here alive, but conflict photographers also know that those who experiences ongoing violence, leave a part of themselves behind on the battlefield. He experiences guilt and shame about being honoured and over-rewarded for images that he knows he created out of the pain of others. His began photographing landscapes - not just as an artistic change; it was a form of therapy. He has called it, a way of washing the blood off his hands. But when you look at these landscapes, they still retain deep shadows from his war experiences. An important project for McCullin was his exploration of sites relating to the Roman Empire. He travelled to North Africa, The Middle East and Europe to take pictures of sites like Hadrian’s Wall and Palmyra in Syria.
