Subbing on Broadway: Like Recording to Tape

Subbing on a Broadway show for the first time feels a lot like recording to tape: no edits, no second takes, and nowhere to hide.

This video is a little off the usual Made on Tape path—but when I started preparing to sub on "Operation Mincemeat" (which just opened here in NYC), I realized how close the experience is to high-stakes recording. You prep obsessively, you try to stay calm, and then you hit the downbeat and trust the work you put in.

In this one, I walk through what the process looked like: getting the call, studying the book, sitting in with the regular, and managing nerves on show day. I also reflect on what makes live performance feel so alive—and so scary.

Let me know in the comments: have you had a gig like this? First show, first session, something where it had to go right? I’d love to hear about it.
