A floating point exception is a runtime error triggered by invalid mathematical operations on values, such as division by zero, overflow, underflow, or invalid operations. In hardware and software systems, these anomalies are detected by the processor and signaled to the operating system via SIGFPE (Signal Floating Point Exception), which typically terminates the program and generates a core dump for debugging.
