Nicole Lizée (*1973): Another Living Soul

Canadian composer, Nicole Lizée, known for her experimentation with sounds, explores non-conventional sonic colors and textures in her string quartet, Another Living Soul. Commissioned by the Kronos Quartet in 2016, this piece requires idiosyncratic extended technique such as stomping, singing, ringing bells, and playing with tubes. The composer remarks that “Another Living Soul is a stop motion animation for string quartet…the end result has always been incrementally imbuing vitality and life to something devoid of any such spark in its own.” This quote refers to both the “action” you will see in the extended techniques employed by the musicians and the structure of the piece. Even though the piece only spans 8 minutes, there are two contrasting sections that develop quite slowly: one is amorphously rhythmic and the other - extremely rhythmic. The work is still rooted in classical forms, mimicking a sonatina form with quite an extended coda, but its avant-garde extended techniques encourage both the musicians and the audience to engage with sounds that are not normally heard on the concert stage.
