The following is a technical tutorial on creating a tidal chart in the field. One function of a tidal chart is to observe the tides for predictions or modeling. It can also be used to correct bathymetric measurements (periodic observations).
The tide chart is made from markers attached to PVC pipes and then tied to the pier. Before conducting tidal observations, it is necessary to tie the tide chart to the same coordinate system as the nearest control point. This can be done using terrestrial or extraterrestrial measurements; hierarchically, the most recommended method is using a waterpass to obtain tidal elevations.
Afterward, tidal observations can be conducted as needed. Intervals of 30 minutes to 1 hour are sufficient for modeling or prediction. However, shorter intervals are sometimes required to meet Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) standards.
