AVEC’s new song should have never seen the light of day. Too private and way too personal as the song “I Don’t Pray” is about the tragic death of her beloved uncle, who passed away at only just 42 years of age at the start of the year 2020. Shortly before his unexpected passing the young father of a two-year-old daughter was able to listen to the latest album (HOMESICK) of AVEC, which his niece sent him prior to the official release date. She was absolutely proud to be sharing this with her uncle and he enjoyed it very much. He supported her from the very start and instantly recognized which potential his niece had in her. However, this should have been their last time communicating.
The family of the Upper Austrian singer/songwriter was in shock about the fast progression of his illness and there was almost no chance of healing. AVEC could only help herself with what she can do best: writing. Stuck in this whole imminent, surreal scenario, the first part of “I Don’t Pray” with the most special line “no I don’t pray, but tonight I do” came to her mind almost immediately, and the hope that it’s all going to be alright in the end was stronger than ever.
But it turned out to be worse than expected. After only a week in between praying and hoping, it all came to an unfortunate end. One of the most important people of her life was gone. Where to go when there’s no way in sight? Where to put all these emotions and feelings of devastation and grief, of anger and despair? How to cope? In her very first single “Granny” (2016) AVEC talked about the Alzheimer-illness and the passing of her grandmother (his mother) in a completely undisguised and personal way and showed us the bigger picture of all these dark emotions. Guided by her pain she went where it hurts the most and finished her song “I Don’t Pray” shortly after the message of his passing. With the intention of never releasing this very special song, she buried it away, followed by a pandemic, an album release (HOMESICK) and a cancelled tour.
A year had to pass by for AVEC to be able to see “I Don’t Pray” in a different light and decided for herself to release the song in hopes of processing her grief and sorrow. She used the acoustic version and in her inimitable way created a completely arranged version. Goosebumps guaranteed. AVEC once again succeeded with the greatest of ease to convey the heavy topic of death, disguised by a catchy melody, into the shape of a pop song and therefore erecting a memorial in her uncle’s honour. With certainty he would be proud of his niece, who proved her strength in the darkest hour.
With all that said, even the roaring success of family person AVEC fades into the background. In her mid-20ies the Upper Austrian artists has achieved a lot and hence reached a crucial point in her carrier, where she’s perceived as an internationally relevant pop act. After her first releases proved popular and were played in local radio stations on heavy rotation, she received a great deal of attention from streaming platforms (on Spotify she has now reached over 60 million plays) where she gathered international audience. 2020 AVEC won the “Female Spotify Campaign” followed by a Spotify live recording session in the course of her album release. The young musician also won quite a number of awards: 2019 (she won) her first Amadeus Award (in the category Alternative) and won the Eurosonic’s own Music Moves Europe Talent Award (in the category Singer/Songwriter) in the same year.
The passionate musician is absolutely looking forward to performing live again in front of an audience. Her last Austrian shows were all sold out and she was invited to some of the biggest international festivals (Sziget Festival, Reeperbahn Festival, Eurosonic Festival, Great Escape Festival in Brighton, among others). She’s also supported stars like Sting and Zucchero. Due to the pandemic the German-Austrian tour got cancelled but despite that concert halls all over Europe will be welcoming this rising star.
