Beginning of History
The plant began its history under a completely different name. In 1941, with the outbreak of war, the Soviet government decided to relocate large factories to the east of the country, beyond the Volga, to the Urals, and to Siberia. At this time, the Soviet Union was already fighting Germany. At that time, the plant was known as ZIS – "Stalin Plant" – and it was decided to evacuate it to the city of Ulyanovsk on the Volga. Before the New Year, all the equipment and machinery were transported and installed, with work carried out at an accelerated pace, in two or even three shifts. The move was completed very quickly, despite the winter, and by early 1942, the plant had begun producing its products at its new location.
The plant's personnel were primarily sent from Moscow, but local residents were also recruited; they were trained in the new craft, working mostly at night. The Moscow workers were resettled in nearby villages; they were the most valuable personnel, and at first, much depended on them. The new plant, in addition to vehicles for the Red Army, also produced combat ammunition and some other purely military products.
In 1943, the UAZ (Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant) was created on the basis of the ZIS plant. It was around this time that work began on a brand-new vehicle, and a year later, the plant's engineers designed and developed their first creation, a diesel-powered truck that could compete even with American engineering. This was the UlZis-253, also known as the NAZ-253, which served as the basis for several production ZIS truck models.

The first vehicle introduced by the plant under its own UAZ brand was the UAZ-300. Although it, too, never went into production, the development of this vehicle provided the plant's specialists with truly invaluable experience.

In 1954, the plant established its own design department (previously, it had to rely on facilities from the GAZ plant). Initially, he dealt only with documents and contracts, but soon the department's employees began conducting research in mechanical engineering, and apparently for good reason, as they produced a series of improved GAZ-69 vehicles that remained popular for decades.

1955 was a significant year for the plant. The plant began producing vans, trucks, and minibuses for medical services, including ambulances, minibuses for transporting children, and all-terrain vehicles for the police. In these vehicles, the engine was mounted not in front of the driver's cab, but under the body, without affecting the vehicle's length. This opened up new opportunities for improving the performance of the vehicles produced. Even at that time, the plant's vehicles were renowned for their excellent cross-country ability and were very easy to operate. They became renowned abroad and were exported to 22 countries. The largest number of UAZ vehicles were purchased by China, India, and Egypt.
Equipment upgrades
In 1960, the production equipment underwent a significant upgrade. A rod-type production line was developed, which increased the speed and efficiency of vehicle production. Vehicles became increasingly high-quality, and even European consumers, particularly Italian ones, began to take notice.
