In this Excel video lesson, we'll learn how to use the VLOOKUP function to help us solve a practical, real-world problem.

We'll automate a repetitive task using the VLOOKUP function in an Excel spreadsheet.

Whenever you have a repetitive process or task, you can use Excel to help you automate tasks and processes through the formulas, functions, tools, and features that Excel offers.

In this free Excel tutorial, I have two spreadsheets.

The first spreadsheet is an inventory spreadsheet in Excel, where I have various product information such as the product name and cost.

In the other spreadsheet, I have a sales report of all orders. In this sales spreadsheet, I need to fill in the cost of each product sold.

However, if I do this task manually, it will take a very long time. It's a very large and repetitive task.

Therefore, I will use the VLOOKUP function to help me solve this task automatically.

The VLOOKUP formula basically returns a corresponding value for the product, item, or value you are looking for. In other words, imagine the example above, where I need to fill in the cost of each of the products sold. Since I already have this information filled in another spreadsheet, which is my inventory spreadsheet, I can use VLOOKUP to retrieve this information for me.

Thus, every time VLOOKUP finds the item, both in the sales spreadsheet and in the inventory spreadsheet, it will return the cost of the product.

This product cost will be retrieved from the inventory spreadsheet and brought to the sales spreadsheet. Therefore, I believe that the VLOOKUP function in Excel is one of the most important functions in Excel, as it can help us save time in our daily work and can help us in a job interview.

In my experience, the VLOOKUP function always comes up in Excel tests for job interviews and can also help us in the job market by automating repetitive tasks.
