NATIONAL DEFENSE UNIVERSITY:
Following the July 15th coup attempt, military schools were also included in the reorganization process of military institutions. In this process, the Naval High School, Işıklar Military Air High School, Kuleli Military High School, Maltepe Military High School, and the non-commissioned officer training schools and War Academies, which met the Turkish Armed Forces' need for non-commissioned officers and officers and were infiltrated by members of the Gülen Movement, shown as the perpetrators of the military coup attempt, were closed by a decree law that came into effect on July 31, 2016, and all students' ties with these schools were severed. With the same decree, the National Defence University was established to fill the gap in educational institutions that would meet the need for officers and non-commissioned officers following the closure of these schools, providing education at associate, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels.
The university, which opened for education and training with a ceremony held at the Air War College on February 12, 2017, opened its Naval War College and Army War College on March 13, 2017. Associate degree education is provided through non-commissioned officer vocational schools formerly affiliated with the Turkish Armed Forces but now under the university's control; undergraduate education is provided at war colleges equivalent to faculties; and postgraduate education is provided through institutes established in place of the closed War Academies.
The university's associate degree programs are offered at the Band Non-Commissioned Officer Vocational School, Naval Non-Commissioned Officer Vocational School, Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer Vocational School, and Army Non-Commissioned Officer Vocational School; undergraduate education is offered at the Naval War College, Air Force War College, and Army War College; Postgraduate education is provided by the Atatürk Strategic Studies Institute, Alparslan Defense Sciences Institute, Barbaros Naval Sciences and Engineering Institute, Naval Warfare Institute, Fatih War History Research Institute, Hezarfen Aviation and Space Technologies Institute, Air Warfare Institute, Army Warfare Institute, National Defense and Security Institute, and Joint Warfare Institute.
With the establishment of the university, the subordination of the Army War College, Naval War College, and Air War College to the force commands was eliminated. These schools, which train officers for the Turkish Armed Forces, graduate students after at least four years of training provided by civilians.
When the university was first established, its rector was selected by the President from among three candidates, upon the recommendation of the Minister of National Defense and the approval of the Prime Minister. Vice-rectors, up to a maximum of four, were also appointed by the Minister of National Defense. It was initially envisioned that the university's organizational structure would be established later by a decision of the Council of Ministers. However, following the political system change in Türkiye in 2018, the appointment of the rector and the decision regarding the organization were left to the President.
Institute directors are appointed by the Minister of National Defence, while the sub-units of the institutes are established by the Ministry of National Defence upon the proposal of the rector. The operation and other matters of the institutes are regulated by regulations issued by the Ministry of National Defence. Military academies and non-commissioned officer vocational schools operate under the supervision of university administrations according to their own special laws.
