Solo Autumn Wild Camp on Heron Pike | Hilleberg Soulo | Lake District
Autumn colours below. Lake District mountains in every direction. And a tent waiting to become home for the night.
Join me for a peaceful solo hiking and wild camping adventure in the Lake District, heading high into the fells to spend an autumn night on Heron Pike.
With everything I need carried in my backpack and the Hilleberg Soulo providing shelter for the night, this is exactly the kind of mountain escape I love.
🍂 AUTUMN WILD CAMPING IN THE LAKE DISTRICT
There’s something special about the Lake District in autumn.
The landscape changes colour.
The temperatures begin to fall.
The trails become quieter.
And the mountains take on a completely different atmosphere.
For this adventure, I’m heading towards Heron Pike, a classic Wainwright rising above the beautiful landscape around Ambleside and Grasmere.
No huge objective.
No need to rush.
Just a backpack, a mountain and somewhere high in the fells to spend the night.
🥾 HIKING TO HERON PIKE
As I gain height, the views gradually open up across the surrounding Lake District.
This is one of my favourite parts of any wild camping adventure.
The further you walk from the road, the quieter everything becomes.
Eventually the sounds of everyday life disappear.
And it’s just you and the mountains.
With all my camping equipment carried on my back, I continue towards Heron Pike looking for somewhere suitable to spend the night.
⛺ A NIGHT ALONE ON HERON PIKE
Eventually, it’s time to stop walking.
I find my spot, drop the backpack and unpack the Hilleberg Soulo.
Tent pitched.
Sleeping system out.
Kettle on.
And suddenly this little patch of the Lake District becomes home for the night.
That’s the moment I look forward to.
After spending hours walking through the landscape, everyone else gradually disappears back towards the valleys.
But I get to stay.
🌄 AUTUMN IN THE FELLS
As evening arrives, there’s nothing left to do except enjoy the landscape.
Watch the light change.
Take in the views.
Make something to eat.
And enjoy the peace of being alone in the mountains.
Wild camping doesn’t always need extreme weather or huge distances to be an adventure.
Sometimes it’s simply about escaping somewhere beautiful and staying long enough to properly appreciate it.
And autumn in the Lake District is pretty difficult to beat.
🏕️ HILLEBERG SOULO
For this wild camp I’m using my Hilleberg Soulo, a tent I’ve relied on for many of my solo mountain camps.
It’s not the lightest shelter to carry into the fells, but the combination of space, stability and confidence it gives me makes it a great choice when I’m heading into exposed mountain environments.
For a quiet autumn night on Heron Pike, it makes a pretty comfortable home.
