The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise is a joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea that takes place annually. The exercise is designed to strengthen the combined defense posture and alliance response capabilities based on scenarios that reflect diverse threats within the security environment and lessons learned from recent wars and conflicts.
The exercise will take place from August 21-31, 2023 and will include live field maneuvers, computer simulation-based command post exercises, and related civil defense drills.
The exercise comes in response to evolving nuclear and missile threats from North Korea, officials said, while drawing on observations of warfare in real-world environments such as Ukraine The joint drills are defensive and training elements of the upcoming exercise.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise is one of the largest military training events in the Indo-Pacific region. It brings Airmen from across the globe to facilitate, manage, and participate in the Seventh Air Force’s portion of the exercise at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea.
