VRRP is the industry-standard FHRP (First Hop Redundancy Protocol), which was created in response to the Cisco-proprietary HSRP (Hot Standby Router Protocol). VRRP also offers gateway protection and largely operates in the same fashion as HSRP, but there are some important differences to know.
