About the Journey
Sometimes the best backcountry trips are the ones you never planned. When early season conditions threw a wrench into my original itinerary, I decided to pack up the gear and explore the historic South River area on the edge of the Almaguin Highlands. Navigating the river during the spring run-off meant high water, swift currents, and a chance to hunt down a legendary "lost" canoe route that has been slowly reclaimed by the forest.
Armed with a map and standard backcountry gear, this trip was less about crushing massive mileage and more about slowing down, enjoying the dreamy morning mist, and experiencing the pure magic of an Ontario spring. From sun-drenched flatwater to tight, log-choked creeks where the old portage trails have completely vanished, it was a reminder of why we head into the wild in the first place.
