WHAT IS APOTHEOSIS?
Originally hosted on the Speculative Evolution Zetaboards forums, Apotheosis: Aedificatoris in Absentia was a play-by-post game started on June 15th of 2013, by user dialforthedevill. Players of the game took on the role of a god in the ancient world, attempting to gain followers, and powers based on the beliefs of those followers. Naturally, quite a bit of world-building and story-telling came about from Apotheosis, to the point that the game took on a life of its own. Boasting more than 300 posts, Apotheosis would go on to garner 35 players, and even migrated to its own forum in 2014. Although the original game came to an end in 2015, Apotheosis: Aedificatoris in Absentia would go on to have numerous sequels and spin-off games. Today the game is in its eighth edition, Apotheosis: Sacramentum, and is hosted on discord by user Holben. Although certain aspects of Apotheosis have changed, the legacy of that first game lives on 10 years later.
To honor Apotheosis, its legacy, and the community that has sprung up around it, I have chosen to record the first arc of the first game, up until the first breech expansion. To me, this remains one of the most iconic periods of Apotheosis. Along the way, I may be providing commentary, context, and analysis, and pointing out ways the game has evolved over time. It is my hope that I can share something that was strangely influential in my younger adult years to a new audience, and have an excuse to enjoy an old classic.
