The news of the war finds Rita and Ash in different cities, and they don't even have time to say goodbye. Rita and her students are in Leningrad, while Pepel is immediately drafted to the front.
Petrov reaches Lyuban, but fails to find the suitcase containing the common fund in the little church. Then he hears the voice of a local idiot, Gosha, who tells Petrov that "there's nothing here anymore." Petrov begins questioning Gosha, trying to find out where he hid the suitcase.
Rita is evacuated and placed in the house of a grumpy old woman, where the young woman is forced to experience all the hardships of the home front.
Pepel, now a major, is given command of a penal company that no one can control. Pepel is also advised not to interfere with them. But he has his own plan.
Petrov and his gang carry out a daring attack on the Pervomaysky gold mine, stealing gold ready for shipment. All the prospectors are killed; only one worker manages to escape to the forest. He keeps a close eye on the bandits and overhears one of them addressing Petrov as "Pepel."
Pepel, meanwhile, takes over his new unit and accidentally witnesses NKVD Major Yaremenko reprimanding soldier Petrishchev. Pepel orders the soldier removed and tries to find out from Yaremenko how he overlooked the violations that occurred under his previous command.
Rita explores the new unit and meets the head of the medical unit, Nadezhda, and her daughter, Katya. After chatting, the women agree to go together to the nearby village of Sortavala.
