The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil issued a statement today condemning any initiative that could loosen abortion laws in Brazil. This statement from the CNBB is a response to the Lula government's withdrawal from the Geneva Consensus, which could open the door to the legalization of abortion in the country. The announcement of the withdrawal was released in a statement signed by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Women, and Human Rights and Citizenship. Countries such as Egypt, the United States, Hungary, Uganda, and Indonesia, among others, are part of the league. Brazil joined the group in October 2019, in an act signed by former President Jair Bolsonaro.
