In this easy step by step buttercream flower piping tutorial I will teach you how to pipe begonias! These two toned buttercream begonia flowers use a # 102 petal piping tip, and are incredibly easy to make. These delicate piped flowers can be used to decorate flower cakes, floral cupcakes and even sugar cookies! These begonia flowers can be any colour that you would like. I have included my buttercream recipe down below, as well as detailed piping instructions as well. Don't forget to check out the rest of my buttercream flower piping tutorial series, also linked below!

Piping instructions
To begin attach a square of parchment to a flower nail. With the wide end of your number 102 tip touching the flower nail and the narrow and pointed up you will apply pressure and spin the flower nail to form a cone in the center of your parchment square. Encircle this cone with a second cone. This will be the base that we will pipe our begonia onto.

With the wide end facing down and the narrow end facing up we will begin piping our petals. To pipe your first petal you will apply pressure pull up while turning your flower nail and then pull back down and touch the tip to the base to finish your petal. Overlapping your previous petal slightly you will again apply pressure pull up while spinning your flower nail and pull back down to the base. You will notice that the narrow end of my tip is pointed inwards towards the centre of the flower nail for these first three petals. Pipe a third petal ensuring that you overlap the previous petal as well as the first petal that we have formed. You want these first three petals to come together in the center and cover up the cone that we are using as our base.

As we come in to add our second row of petals we will angle the narrow end of our tip out slightly so that it’s pointing straight up and starting at the center of one of those initial petals that you made you will apply pressure pull up while spinning and then pull back down towards the flower nail. Continue piping petals until you have fully encircled that first row.

As you come in to pipe the third row of petals you will need to angle your tip out slightly more and this row of petals is going to be more narrow and a little bit longer than the previous row. To get a more narrow petal we will just spin our flower nail a little bit more quickly and move our tip up and down in a faster motion. We will also want to pull these ones up slightly higher than the previous row so that you get a nice 3D look on your flowers.

For the final row of petals you will need to angle your tip out even further, and again, ensuring that you overlap the points where you start and stop each petal you are going to apply pressure pull up while turning and then come back down to the flower nail to form each of these petals. Once you have piped your fourth row then your begonia is complete.

Preparing your piping bag
To get a two-tone buttercream effect for these flowers you will need to make two different colours of buttercream. Using a long narrow spatula you will line your accent colour up with the seam of your piping bag and spread a thin line right along the side. I like to come in with a bench scraper just to get everything nice and tight. Then you can fill the remainder of your bag with your base coloured buttercream. If you scroll down a little bit you will find my buttercream recipe as well as my colouring instructions for this particular flower.

Buttercream Recipe:

Ingredients
1/2 Cup butter softened to room temperature
2 Cups powdered sugar
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
1-2 Tablespoons milk

Directions:
In a large bowl if using a hand mixer or in the bowl of your stand mixer cream butter on medium low speed for 2-3 minutes or until fluffy and pale in colour. Add 1/2 of the powdered sugar and mix for 2 minutes. Add remaining powdered sugar and mix for another 2 minutes. Your buttercream should be fluffy, pale and thick at this point. Add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix well. If the buttercream is still too thick/stiff add another tablespoon of milk and continue mixing. You will want a medium consistency buttercream to pipe your flowers with! Add food colouring.

For this flower I use Wilton gel colour in red red for the accent colour and some Wilton orange for the base colour.
