Founded around the 11th century and known as Edo, this is a city shaped not only by growth and modernization, but also by repeated destruction, survival, and rebirth. Tokyo’s story is deeply dramatic. For centuries, the lives of Japanese people were marked by earthquakes, fires, wars, political instability, and constant transformation.

I used several professional AI tools, together with editing and post-production, to transform each scene into a smooth, cinematic journey through Japan’s history. The video keeps the same viewpoint from beginning to end, allowing the viewer to watch the country’s transformation unfold naturally over time. The sound and music are carefully designed to reflect each era, from traditional Japanese atmospheres to the intensity of modernization, war, reconstruction, and the future. Every element is shaped to create a clear sense of story and flow, so the video feels like one continuous passage through Japan’s dramatic evolution.

Please note: This is an artistic interpretation of how Tokyo, and especially the Shinjuku area, may have changed over time. Edo began to develop around the 15th century, while the surrounding plains were already populated by farming communities, temples, small settlements, and rural roads. I have done my best to make the reconstruction as historically accurate as possible. However, because this project covers a very long period of time and a large urban transformation, some mistakes, simplifications, and inaccuracies are inevitable. The ending is inspired by Japan’s long-term earthquake forecasts, which warn of the possibility of a major earthquake occurring within the next 30 years. I have also included fictional scenarios and an ending style based on my personal taste, purely for entertainment purposes.

How it’s made:
I chose a fictional street inspired by Shinjuku. Although Tokyo was originally founded near the mouth of the Sumida River, I deliberately selected Shinjuku to highlight the city’s major commercial growth, especially in the modern era. For centuries, this area, like much of the Kanto Plain, remained comparatively underdeveloped.

✔ Researched the most visually significant moments in Tokyo’s history (see “Sources & Research” below)
✔ Designed the storyboard, historical progression, and pacing of the location through time
✔ Generated and refined the street model with AI tools, always from the exact same perspective
✔ Populated each scene with people, animals, and traffic using AI
✔ Animated each frame, then edited, composited, and refined details in post-production
✔ Added sound design and music to match the mood of each era
