Yuning Liang and Tristan Ross walk through what it actually takes to bring NixOS to RISC-V hardware using DeepComputing's AI PC laptop as the primary target.
They identify the two central blockers: vendor kernels forked from old LTS trees that use unratified RISC-V vector ISA extensions, and proprietary toolchains that break NixOS's reproducibility guarantees.
Their roadmap includes pre-silicon kernel upstreaming, an open-source GPU project under the Linux Foundation, and a developer hardware sponsorship program for NixOS and RISC-V contributors.
