In this bonsai video, we are styling and shaping a challenging juniper. This is a first styling of this tree where we give it a basic shape, almost like a skeleton of that the finished tree will look like.
Xavier's Channel: @XaviersBonsaiRetreat
Xavier purchased this tree back in 2014, and it’s been growing in his garden ever since. It was repotted two years before this styling session. In this video, I take on the challenge Xavier gave me with this juniper and walk through the full process. I talk about the tools I use, how to enhance the bark and pot using camellia oil, and explore several design options depending on your aesthetic preferences. You'll also see how to create a jin and extend it into a shari to give the tree a more aged look. I apply a guy wire, demonstrate how to wire using copper, and wrap things up with a discussion on proper aftercare and the future vision for the tree.
Using Copper Wire:
Copper wire is used on conifers because of its strength and holding power. Compared to aluminium, copper is much stiffer, which allows it to firmly hold branches in place. Copper wire hardens slightly over time, which helps maintain the shape as the branch sets. Because copper is stronger, a thinner piece of copper wire will hold the same branch a thicker piece of aluminium would need to hold so you get a more pleasing look in the end too.
