User Interface (UI) Definition: The visual bridge between a human user and a computer program. In 2005, YouTube's UI used basic HTML tables and Adobe Flash to let users play, rate, and comment on videos.
Ever wondered what YouTube looked like on Day 1? 🌐 In this video, we step into a time machine to look back at the original 2005 YouTube user interface designed by Jawed Karim, Chad Hurley, and Steve Chen by comparing it to the person who used the same 2005 user interface and used it in kamtape.com.
Before it became a streaming giant, YouTube started with the failed dating slogan "Tune In, Hook Up" before pivoting to "Broadcast Yourself". The original UI was incredibly primitive:
• Powered entirely by Adobe Flash Player in a tiny, fixed window
• A homepage featuring just a handful of videos and a search box
• A 5-star rating system instead of a Like button
• Minimalist, gray-and-blue web layout with simple navigation tabs
