After your comments, I'm returning to the world of railways! This time, not on an old locomotive, but on a modern DRAGON locomotive – a diesel-electric monster!
Together with Paweł, a driver with 30 years of experience (and a locomotive bearing his name!), I'll explore what a 12-hour freight service is like, why a driver must be self-sufficient, and what happens when the on-board computer breaks down.
I'll show you how the Dragon locomotive differs from the old machines: cameras instead of mirrors, a microwave, and a refrigerator/heater! Paweł will tell you whether he prefers this comfortable locomotive or a return to his roots with an old locomotive.
Thanks to Olavion from the multi-utility UNIMOT Capital Group for the opportunity to complete such an interesting and specific section - https://olavion.unimot.pl/
TWO ENGINES: The locomotive has an electric drive (under the traction) and a small diesel engine (520 HP!) for the "last mile" – placing the cars on the tracks without electricity.
ETCS SYSTEM: I'll show you the active deadman (the famous device that constantly needs to be reset!), the radiostop system, and the main computer. The driver is like a computer technician – he resets the system in the event of a failure!
SAFETY: Braking is electrodynamic. At a speed of 160 km/h, there's no way to stop the train in time! I'll also show you how to call for help and evacuate to the engine room in the event of a collision.
Earnings and Flexibility (Why Did Paweł Switch from Passenger to Freight?)
In freight traffic, the driver is better utilized! Even though we stood for 5 hours today waiting for a ticket in Tricity, we still get paid for standing!
SALARY: I'm comparing passenger and freight traffic. Freight trains used to earn several times more than passenger trains (today, the difference is smaller). Earnings are a fixed salary plus mileage, overtime, and night shift allowances (around PLN 10,000 with allowances).
LOGISTICS: A loaded train with fuel means 100 trucks on the road! I'll show you why a freight train driver must think more about the rear of the train (risk of breakage and cracking) than the front.
Process from A to Z (Auditor's Job!)
PREPARATION: I'll show you the entire procedure: receiving the key, checking the logbook, engaging the pantograph (3500 V!), and releasing the brake.
AUDITOR'S WORK: See what the auditor's job (Marcin) is like – he inspects all the wagons and performs a detailed brake test. He must ensure that the set has the correct pressure. The auditor also earns good rates!
THIS IS A TRUE LIFESTYLE! You have to be a "railroad nut" to survive in this profession. I'll show you why a train driver is his own helm and ship!
