Light is the key to offer the most outstanding experience in the world of photography and videography. And we live in times ruled by portable devices. So here are my favorite three choices of 2019: “the Budget”, “the Ultra-portable one”, and … “the Master”. Three choices to fit to anyone’s pocket and requirements, let’s get started!
Let’s begin with the most budget-friendly LED. It is brought by Ulanzi and represents a fixed-white-color light with 49 LEDs and option to control the brightness for just 10 dollars. The device only has a control wheel, which also acts as a power button – gives you the awesome kind of oldschool feeling. Dimming the LEDs is nice and easy. They managed to stabilize the operation of the LEDs and even if the battery level is close to zero, the light intensity doesn’t change. Oh – that’s by the way the best news – it has replaceable batteries – the standard AA model, and therefore the battery life depends on the battery used. With about half of the load I got around 3 hours operation time with 2400mah rechargeable batteries.
Let’s welcome our second contender – the “ultra-portable”! It is waterproof, it has the ability to switch different colors thanks to these removable filters, it’s got Bluetooth and can be the greatest thing in the world, as well as a little frustrating – sometimes.
The light can operate absolutely independently – and has a few shooting modes – a single control button to switch between these and to adjust the light intensity – and this is where I could refer to frustration – getting used to it takes time. The build quality is superb, and extremely durable, and I guess the use cases of that one are countless. Due to the small scale – the battery life is limited, but still remarkable for this size – you get 2 hours at 100% brightness. It doesn’t have a cold shoe, but has a quarter inch mount which is the most commonly used, and can fit any camera, tripod, or actioncam accessory. The Bluetooth is used by the smartphone app - Mirfak is the name of the brand. The company looks to be Gudsen’s subsidiary, and price of the LED Light is $60.
Let’s check now the “master”! I’ve been neglecting this light for weeks, because I’ve thought at the start – it’s expensive. Oh silly me! This probably is the best portable light you can buy at the moment for around 160$.
It is apparently the largest of all, the most capable of all, and the only out of these three, that actually has integrated color LEDs. And that’s besides the adjustable white gamma – which by the way you can fine tune between 2500K – warm white which is yellowish, and the 8500K – looking quite blue-ish..
The illumination area is 5 inch-big, backed by 290 sRGB leds, it has three –buttoned operation, besides the power button at the top. Besides the default shooting mode – there’s HSI color mode The the third mode – is the special effect mode.
For mounting – there is a cold shoe - omnidirectional – and you can get quite creative about it, since any direction is supported.
