🚗Tustin Legacy: U.S. Air Base Becomes Trendy Development
It's not part of the movie set for Star Wars, but the WWII-era blimp hangars at the former Tustin Marine Air Base look imposing and people unfamiliar with this area always wonder what they could be. The base is now being redeveloped into a trendy new multi-use community. But the historic hangars remain. The project, under construction, will include parks, a commercial retail center and various densities of housing. A prominent legacy feature is the set of two huge aircraft hangars (more info below).

Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Tustin played a critical role in Navy and Marine aviation for over 50 years. At its high point, the base employed some 5,000 military and civilian personnel, about 4,500 of whom lived on the base.
The base was commissioned in 1942 to be a Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) facility to patrol the coastline with manned blimps following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Blimps would conduct reconnaissance missions and sometimes were equipped with machine guns and depth charges to attack hostile ships and submarines. Operations commenced in 1942 with a single blimp and expanded to 12 blimps operating from a concrete mat and mooring mast until the hangars were completed the following year.
Seventeen stories high, over 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide, the hangars were, and still are, two of the largest wooden structures ever built. Designing and building the two structures in 1942, during wartime, on a hyper-accelerated schedule, and with a nearly all-wood design, is what earned the hangars their 1993 listing by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks of the 20th Century.
