Review: We Just Went Off-Roading With The New Mazda CX-50
Mazda's new CX-50 crossover clearly aims to challenge Subaru and possibly even Audi, with a newly athletic exterior design plus off-roading and towing features perfect for overlanding fans. With a torquey turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing up to 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, routed to all four wheels through a traditional six-speed automatic, the CX-50 Turbo's performance definitely sounds good on paper.
HotCars contributor Michael Van Runkle took the new CUV out to test Mazda's fancy G-Vectoring Control system, which plays with throttle response and steering weight to optimize handling in slippery stuff and hauling. Hill climbs and a heavily rutted dirt road might sound like a bold move for this Mazda's debut, but on the asphalt, what's essentially a lifted Mazda3 drives impressively well.
