CFTC Labels Bitcoin and Ethereum as Commodities in Binance Lawsuit
The CFTC Chair has stated that the agency intends to maintain oversight of the cryptocurrency sector, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin, which have been designated as commodities by the CFTC.
The agency has accused Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, of breaking the law by trading futures, options, swaps, and leveraged retail commodity transactions involving digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ether, and Litecoin, for people in the United States.
The categorization of cryptocurrencies as commodities has divided the crypto community, and there are questions about whether all cryptocurrencies are securities, as claimed by SEC director Gary Gensler, except for Bitcoin. Litecoin has confirmed that it recognizes itself as a commodity under Section 1a (9) of the Act, 7 U.S.C.
