Niccolò Machiavelli's Discourses on Livy is one of the most remarkable books in the western tradition of political philosophy. Though Machiavelli is better known for The Prince (which might be the most famous work of political theory of all time), the Discourses arguably gives us a more nuanced and comprehensive picture of Machiavelli's political thought.
In the Discourses Machiavelli considers different kinds of regimes, but especially the republic and specifically the Roman Republic. Machiavelli finds in Titus Livy's History of Rome instructive lessons on how to maintain a Republic across time. Consequently, the Discourses provides us with an extraordinary account of Republican political thought.
