Which VPN Protocol is best :: Biz Tech Tips #25
PPTP (Point-To-Point Tunneling Protocol). Comes free with some computers, but is barely more secure by today's standards. Very compatible but lacks security. Evaluation: Avoid.
L2TP/IPsec ip-sec (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol). It's a little bit slower speed-wise, can be used on iOS when not all other mentioned options can. The concept of how this works is fine, but the execution is low quality and there is debate about it being cracked. Evaluation: Minimum for iOS, but still avoid if possible.
SSTP (Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol). This is another Microsoft-built protocol. Windows-only. The connection is established with some SSL/TLS encryption, which is what a lot of today's web stuff is built around. Evaluation: Acceptable if you have Windows
IKEv2 Ike V2 (Internet Key Exchange, Version 2). This is yet another Microsoft-built protocol. Great option, especially if on the go. This supports a whole bunch of protocols recommended by various Internet security associations. Evaluation: Great option, but only MS and Blackberry, and easier to block.
OpenVPN. This is Open Sourced, which means it can be inspected for vulnerabilities. As a result it is way more versatile, and many rank OpenVPN as the most secure because it's the most updated, and can go across platforms. Evaluation: Best, most updated, fastest, most configurable, but can be tough to setup if you're manually configuring it and not going through an outside provider.
Also, make sure your option has what is called a "kill switch." This means that if your secure connection goes away that your session is terminated. This is important because lots of computers might default back to an unsecured connection, which defeats the purpose.
