Summary:
After World War II, Austria was reestablished. The country and its capital, Vienna, were divided into four occupation zones. The Marshall Plan helped with the reconstruction, with the women who cleared the rubble bearing the brunt of the effort. Karl Renner became Chancellor of the first provisional government. The ÖVP won the first elections. Leopold Figl became Chancellor. In 1955, the occupation ended with the State Treaty. The last prisoners of war returned. Austria was free again, but also committed itself to remaining militarily neutral.
