Today, September 2, is:
🫐 NATIONAL BLUEBERRY POPSICLE DAY!
And the origin story is incredible.
📅 1905
An 11-year-old named Frank Epperson reportedly mixed:
🥤 Flavored drink powder
💧 Water
…and left the mixture outside overnight.
But he forgot something.
🪵 THE STIRRING STICK WAS STILL IN IT.
The night became unusually cold.
🧊 The liquid froze.
The next morning, Frank pulled on the stick…
…and discovered a frozen treat attached to it.
🤯 THE ICE POP!
Years later, he turned the idea into a commercial product and received a patent for his frozen confection in 1924.
And since we're celebrating blueberries today, here's a bonus connection:
🫐 Commercial blueberry cultivation has major New Jersey roots.
Elizabeth White of Whitesbog, New Jersey, worked with USDA botanist Frederick Coville in the early 1900s to develop commercially viable cultivated blueberries.
So today's treat combines TWO pretty amazing American food stories.
🧊 An accidental frozen invention
+
🫐 A fruit with important New Jersey agricultural history
Would you have eaten Frank's accidental frozen drink?
🫐 ABSOLUTELY
🧊 ONLY IF IT'S BLUEBERRY
😂 I'D PROBABLY HAVE THROWN IT AWAY
💙 GIVE ME TWO
