However, before you adopt one of these spiky creatures, let's learn about their world and decide if they're right for you. First and foremost, hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, meaning they're most active at night. In the wild, they prefer a solitary lifestyle and can be a bit shy and wary of people. Building a trusting relationship with a pet hedgehog takes time, patience, and a gentle approach. Hedgehogs are surprisingly active, requiring plenty of space to explore, build nests, and exercise. They are primarily insectivores, enjoying mealworms and crickets. However, fresh fruit can be given in small amounts.
