There are so many specialties and sub categories in the design world, but it mostly is based on where in the AGILE Product Lifecycle they start designing and finish designing.
So a UX Designer can begin from the point of empathy mapping to determine user personas and the goals that those user personas are trying to accomplish. From there, they may write out features in a User Story format from the user’s perspective.

UX Design then gets into User Flow Mapping to plan out all the flows and journeys a user can take to accomplish their goals. Only then, does design visually start happening with Wireframing and Prototyping to create a clickable experience that users can then test with. User testing is another step in the UX Design journey where UX Researchers will determine the proficiency of a Prototype. Then, once a feature or product has launched UX Designers will sometimes crunch a bunch of numbers with data processing to try to find opportunities for improvement.

UI Designers have a little more focused role. They take the User Stories, Wireframes, and Prototypes done in the UX Design process and then they make the final mockups. Here, they may work with branded fonts and typography. They may work with different color palettes and will refine the design using different spacing methods.

Product Designers assume the roles of both a UX
Designer and UI Designer while designing apps.
They generally start and finish the entire design cycle and will get things ready for handoff to development. In a similar way, Web Designers also Use UI/UX Design best practices while working on the design for websites. Then they’ll use data on a launched website to refine the website’s design.
