Harry Vermeegen spoke with Ajax manager Louis van Gaal in May 1995, just before the European Cup final. In the conversation, Louis and Harry said they "didn't want to irritate the Italians." This refers to the 1994 final between Milan and Barcelona, which was lost because then-manager Johan Cruyff had irritated the Italians with remarks! Barcelona lost 4-0. That's why Van Gaal refused to make a prediction, while Harry did, predicting that Ajax would win the European Cup, which they did thanks to a goal from Patrick Kluivert.
