Sowing Broad Beans in Root Trainers
Are you growing broad beans this season?
You can sow broad beans outside in February but if you have mice (or worse, rats) in the garden, there is a very good chance that they will eat the seeds. As broad beans also take up to 2 weeks to germinate, you can loose a lot of growing time waiting for them to come up when they have, in fact, been eaten.
For this reason, I prefer to sow in modular trays and use the deep rootrainers above as they hold plenty of compost and give plenty of room for the bean's large roots. The variety I sow at this time of year is 'Witkeim Manita' for green beans but I am also sowing the pretty pink seeded bean 'Karmayzyn'.
Broad beans are sown at 2.5cm deep and, while they don't need heat to germinate, a little warmth of 18˚C will speed them up a little. Though you can sow later, I do recommend February sowing as broad beans grow best in cool moist conditions so I prefer to get as much done as possible before the now common hot and dry June weather.
