This plane may change the world. But what is it and how much does it cost?
This is the X-59 also dubbed ‘Son of Concorde’. Its aim is simple, to bring back supersonic flight without the sonic boom that caused the end of the Concorde era.
The Concorde used to take less than 3.5 hours to go from London to New York with the record sitting at just 2 hours and 52 minutes.
However, that same flight now takes 7-8.5 hours. Nasa’s plane aims to bring back these improved flight times by reducing the sonic boom to a sonic thump so that the sound will be as loud as a car door closing.
It will be tested by flying over several US communities this year, monitoring the sound on the ground. If all goes well this same technology may be used for commercial or private jets.
The X-59 has a top speed of 937mph and has been in the works since 2016. Lockheed Martin were chosen to design and build the aircraft as part of a $247.5 million contract.
