The Disappearance of Ella Mae Begay
Ella Mae Begay was born on July 21, 1958, and lived in Sweetwater, Arizona, and was well known to the locals as a weaver of traditional Navajo rugs. At the age of 62, she was living alone in a rural area ten miles off the highway, and one of her daughters lived about fifty yards away. Ella had previously gone without electricity in her home, using only oil lamps and candles for light but had recently installed solar panels.
On June 15, 2021, a man busted into her daughter's house, and her daughter hid in her bedroom and watched the man walk over to her mother's home. Soon after, at around 2:30 am, her mother's truck was seen pulling away from her home. Ella was described as a cautious person, and her family said it would have been very uncharacteristic of her to leave home in the middle of the night. However, she has never been heard from again, and the door to her home was discovered to have been kicked open. Her daughter reported her missing that same day.
Ella disappeared along with her silver 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck with the license plate AFE7101. Investigators believe Ella was the victim of foul play, and her case is being investigated as a homicide. 21-year-old Preston Tolth, was a person of interest in the case and had lived near Ella Mae. He was arrested two days later on unrelated charges of battery against a family member and was questioned about her disappearance after his arrest.
Ella Mae's niece, Seraphine Warren, has been a powerful advocate for her aunt, and she and her family launched their own search. Seraphine walked more than 300 miles from Ella Mae's home to Window Rock, Arizona, the Navajo nation's capital. She also walked 2,400 miles across the U.S. from Arizona to Washington D.C., in order to raise awareness for not only Ella Mae but for other missing murdered indigenous women.
As of January 2023, Ella has never been found, and this case remains unsolved.
