Douglas Miles founded Apache Skateboards in 2002 as a way of aligning the values of the skateboarding community with the traditions of the Apache warrior. "You’re Skating on Native Land" speaks to contemporary ideas around cultural resistance while celebrating Indigenous youth culture in the 21st century. Through Apache Skateboards, Miles has also succeeded in creating new conversations around art and skateboarding that challenge preconceived notions of traditional Native American art.
The installation of skateboard decks is accompanied by a site-specific drawing depicting members of Miles’s community in the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. While the images reinforce the notion of cultural resistance, they also celebrate the vitality and presence of the artist’s friends and skateboarding community. In the artist’s own words, he is a photographer that has been capturing “Native American reality, not romanticism; triumph, not tragedy.”
