This week on GZT Alfa, our guest was Mehmet Odabaşı, a member of the Kuwait Turk Advisory Committee.

In this episode, we discussed with Mehmet Odabaşı the fundamental approach of participation banking, how it differs from traditional banking, the jurisprudential principles it is based on, and whether it truly offers a financing model compliant with Islamic principles.

The jurisprudential differences between conventional banking, where money is considered a financial instrument and income is generated through interest, and participation banking, which establishes a structure based on trade and partnership, are clearly highlighted. The fact that participation banks operate through the buying and selling of goods or profit-sharing partnerships provides an important framework for understanding how a system based on commercial profit instead of interest operates.

In addition, the issue of debt ethics, a significant matter in economic life, was also discussed. This episode sheds light on lesser-known aspects of the system, such as why delaying payments is considered a moral issue despite having the means to pay, and why and how Islamic banks transfer late payment fees to charities to avoid interest.

So how do Islamic banks differ from interest? How is sustainable income generated in an interest-free system? Does using a credit card in daily life constitute incurring interest?

These and more are in this episode. Watch now and don't forget to share your thoughts with us 🙌🏼
