This video shows you how to change your car coolant on a Honda, though this applies to many vehciles like Toyota Corolla's, Mazda's etc. This shows you how you can change your coolant at home. Because I am using the same brand/type, there is no need to do a coolant flush. Just drain and fill. Always work on a cold engine. The cooling system is pressurized & coolant expands with heat. It is very dangerous to open when hot (or even warm), coolant will burn you.
Before draining, set your cabin air temperature dial setting the max heat setting. This opens the coolant lines that go to your heater core. Your heater core is located inside your vehicles dashboard. Start the car, set the max heating setting, turn off the car.
Open the radiator drain plug anticlockwise just enough to let the coolant drain. We want the coolant to drain in a control state. You may have to remove the bottom panel. You should replace the o-ring on the drain plug with a new one.
Empty the coolant reservoir tank. It may may be clipped on or have a bolt securing it. Clean the bottom of any dirt or crud. Use a water based degreaser for cleaning. Fill it with new coolant till the max level as coolant expands when hot and you need extra space for expansion.
Some engines have an engine drain plug for the block. Here it is located on the back of the engine & needs a 19 mm socket. Replace the 28 mm washer with a new one. Torque spec, 58 lbf-ft.
You have 2 options, to reuse the same factory filled coolant or get aftermarket concentrated coolant. Here I stuck with Honda Type 2 blue coolant. This is a simple drain & fill procedure. Honda recommends to replace the coolant for the 1st time at 200,000 kms (120,000 miles) or 10 years, then after at 100,000 kms (60,000 miles) or 5 years whichever comes first.
Fill the radiator tank till the top. Keep the cap loosely on, this will help burp the engine/get air bubbles out of the system. Start the car, keep the cabin heat setting on the max & the air blower off. Like for some Corolla models the procedure says to squeeze the top and bottom radiator hose to help get air pockets out of the system. You may have have a bleeder valve to help with this.
It is critical to get all the air out of the cooling system. If not, your engine could overheat. You may not get warm air in the cabin. The radiator cabin is designed to be the highest point of the system & air travels to the highest point.
You have to wait for the radiator fans to kick in 2 times. On this Honda, thermostate opens fully at 91C and fans turn on at 98C. After shut the car and top up the radiator tank (wear gloves, cap will be hot).
