Zuhomim (lat.suchomimus) is a large spinosaurid that lived in the territory of modern Africa. Lived in the early Cretaceous period 121-113 million years ago. Possible ancestor of Spinosaurus.
In 1997, paleontologist Paul Sereno and his team discovered fossils that represented about two-thirds of the skeletal elements of a huge carnivorous dinosaur from Niger. The very first find, a giant finger claw, was made on December 4, 1997.
On November 1, 1998, Paul Sereno, together with a group of paleontologists, described the genus and species Suchomimus tenerensis - "like a crocodile", the specific name refers to the Tenere desert, where the animal was found. The INN GDF500 holotype consists of a partial skeleton, with fragments of the skull, the spine was largely articulated, the rest of the parts consisted of scattered bones that lay on the surface of the desert and were badly damaged by erosion. Fossil specimens are part of the collection of the Niger National Museum.
In 2002, some researchers concluded that the zuchomim was identical to Cristatusaurus lapparenti, described fragmentarily in the same Niger formation, and suggested that they be included in a second baryonyx variety called Baryonyx tenerensis. This decision was later challenged, and the Zuchomim remained a valid genus.
It is curious that the zuchomim lived in the same territory and at the same time as the giant crocodilomorph sarcosuchus.
