Summary:
A game theory problem explains why we fear nuclear war, are losing the climate crisis, and may never meet aliens. It's called the "prisoner's dilemma." Two robbers are held in separate cells, and each has a better chance of turning in their partner—no matter what the other does. Ultimately, both betray each other and receive three years instead of one. This is the Nash equilibrium: rational actions by each lead to an irrational outcome for everyone. The same logic drove the US and USSR into an arms race.
But if rational selfishness leads to disaster, why are we still alive? In 1979, political scientist Robert Axelrod organized a computer strategy tournament. The simplest program, consisting of two lines of code, won—Anatoly Rapoport's "Tit for Tat": start with cooperation, then copy the opponent's last move. Analysis revealed four qualities of successful strategies: kindness (not betraying first), the ability to fight back, the ability to forgive quickly, and clarity of behavior. Cunning predatory programs lost because one accidental betrayal triggered an endless "echo" of mutual revenge.
Cooperation is based on one condition—the "shadow of the future." If the probability of meeting a partner tomorrow is high, cheating is unprofitable: a one-time gain will burn in the fire of future revenge.
Cooperation is not an achievement of intelligence, but a basic law of life. It operates at the level of molecules, viruses, social amoebas, and multicellularity, which has evolved independently at least 50 times.
If this mathematics is universal, it explains the silence of the Universe. On the Kardashev scale, civilizations are classified by energy: Type I uses all the energy of the planet, Type II uses stars (Dyson spheres), Type III uses galaxies. We are currently at 0.7. Each subsequent level requires deeper cooperation among billions of agents over increasingly longer time horizons. The Fermi paradox—"Where are all the aliens?"—can be explained by the "cooperation filter."
